NEW PSP COMING THIS SEPTEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!
Sony took the wraps off of the device we all knew in our hearts was coming: A redesigned PSP. Though it was expected, it's probably a surprise to most how little has changed. The new model keeps the 4.3" LCD screen, and still has UMD. It is, however, 33% lighter and 19% slimmer. Also, the battery is more efficient and games load faster. It can also output a high quality video signal directly to TVs.
The system will also come in two new colors which are also part of two new packs. First is the Ice Silver, part of the $199.99 Entertainment Pack that comes with a 1GB Memory Stick, Daxter, and the Family Guy Frickin' Sweet Collection on UMD. Also is a new, white Star Wars-themed PSP that will retail in October for $199.99 packed with Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron. These release plans are for North America, announcements for Japan and Europe are forthcoming.
Sony's new PSP is slimmer, includes video output!!!
It's not quite the PSP 2 some might've hoped for, but Sony is giving its handheld console a serious refresh in the form of a slimmer, lighter and faster "updated" PSP. The new unit still includes the 4.3-inch LCD and UMD, but is 33 percent lighter, 19 percent slimmer, has sped up game load times and improved battery life. The only real "new" features is a video output capability to allow you to play your PSP games on a big screen TV. You can score one in September in the original Piano Black, a new Ice Silver color, and a Star Wars Battlefront special edition. The latter two PSPs come in $199 bundles with related games and a 1GB Memory Stick in the case of Ice Silver. More pics after the break.
Update: Also worth noting is the fact that this new model "is equipped with enhanced feature to temporarily store game data from UMD, reducing load time during game play." No complaints about that!
Hacked PSP Firmware now available for latest 4.01 System Update
Sony released the latest Sony PSP firmware 4.01 last week. PSP Homebrew hacker Dark Alex and the M33 Team have now released a new version of their custom firmware what allows to run homebrew on the PSP that works with 4.01.
We have not been reporting about the PSP homebrew scene in a while, but it looks like it is still going strong. Maybe it is time for Sony to open up.

Get set for a touchscreen PSP
TODAYThe official doc points towards a "hand-held [sic] device with touchscreen and digital tactile pixels." The latter suggests you’d get some kind of haptic feedback, a la the Samsung Tocco.
It’s listed as a “potential gaming device” or a phone. So there’s a good chance we’re looking at the early plans for a touchscreen PSP or PSP phone. As we found out last week, Sony looks like it’s going it alone with the latter project, rather than hooking up with Sony Ericsson. This patent would certainly back that up.
In the meantime, we’re going to have to make do with the just–outed F305 gaming phone. But don’t be surprised if you catch sight of a touchscreen PSP in the next year or so.

PSP could be set to support PS3 video service
According to internet reports, Sony is hoping to create a service that will allow films downloaded to the PS3 using its newly-announced download service to be transferred to and then watched on PSP.
US movie site Variety has reported the news, which is based on rumours from industry insiders who say Sony is in discussions with various studios to offer their movies on PS3. The service - announced at a Tokyo press conference on Thursday - will enable films and TV shows to be downloaded through the PS3 with Sony hoping it can take on the sorts of rental services already offered by Xbox 360, Apple's iTunes and other websites.
Most interesting, though, is the speculation the service could also include the ability to move downloads from a PS3 onto PSP. There are also renewed whispers that Blu-ray films could in the future be transferred from disc to the handheld, replacing the need for UMDs. This has been mentioned before, but nothing firm has been announced.
We're hoping confirmation of either or both services could materialise at E3 next month. After all, both would no doubt boost the popularity of PSP massively. Sony has announced its Sky-partnered Go!View service already, which will allow users to download selected TV content to watch on their handhelds, but this sounds like it could be an even bigger coup for Sony. Watch this space for news as we get it.
PSP regains top spot in Japanese hardware chart
After a lengthy stint at the top of the Japanese hardware chart, the new Metal Gear Solid sold enough PS3s to knock PSP into second place last week. But only for one week it turns out, because PSP is now back up there again.
According to the latest Media Create figures, PSP sold 59,351 units throughout the week putting it way back ahead of all the competition. PS3 slips down to fourth position with 20,336 consoles sold and Wii and DS take second and third place respectively.
So everything is back in familiar territory again and we only got one week off from reporting the news PSP is still number one in Japan. Not that we're complaining of course.
